Do the mash
Homemade baby food is not as scary as it seems.
With my twins, I decided it was going to work out more cost effective to make my own baby food than buy the ready-made variety.
I really do recommend it, as you know exactly what your baby is eating and it’s very easy to do. If you are going to make your own baby food, make it as simple for yourself as possible. Making batches of food in bulk and freezing it is a lot easier that having to make food from scratch at every mealtime. In the beginning you will just be puréeing fruit and vegetables so you can ease yourself into it.
Get the right equipment
The following items made my life easier!
- Large pots: so you can cook up big batches in one go
- Vegetable steamer, the electric or bamboo variety
- Good quality potato peeler
- Sharp knife
- Stick blender (this has changed my life and is easily the most used appliance in my house)
- Ice cube trays
- Silicone muffin moulds
- Zip lock freezer bags
It’s so easy to boil or steam (if boiling don’t use a lot of water) a big batch of fruit or veggies. Cook up whole packets of apples or pears in one go and freeze the puree. By doing it in batches I would only have to cook for the babies once a week.
How make baby mush
Wash, peel and chop your fruit or veggies and place them in a pot with water or in a steamer. Don’t mix fruit or veggies while cooking- if your baby has a reaction to a new food, it’s difficult to tell what caused it if you have pre mixed food together.
- Once the fruit or veg is cooked, drain the cooking water off and keep aside. Blend the fruit or veggies with the stick blender still smooth. The older the baby, the less you blend. Add in the reserved water until you have the right consistency. If you don’t have enough cooking liquid, use some previously boiled water instead.
- Spoon your purée into ice cube trays, cover with cling wrap and freeze. Once frozen, transfer into a zip lock bag and write the contents and the date on the bag.
- When you need to feed your baby- pop a cube or two into a bowl (the ones with the suction cups free up a hand for you) and defrost in the microwave.
I had a entire drawer in my freezer dedicated to zip lock bags of homemade baby food. As my babies got older, I would vary the combos each day. When their appetites increased, I used muffin moulds instead of the ice cube trays for bigger portions.
I always kept some bananas and avocadoes as a no-cook, quick fix. Just mash them up, either together or own their own as a perfect instant baby meal!
