The great vaccination debate
Are parents who don't vaccinate irresponsible?
It's been 4 years since The Lancet has retracted the paper linking Autism to vaccination stating that the researcher was not honest in his paper and that "it has become clear that several elements of the 1998 paper by Wakefield . . . are incorrect."

Yet the anti-vaccine movement is still going strong. Jenny McCarthy has long been an advocate of this theory and now former reality star Kristen Cavallari (Laguna Beach and The Hills) reveals that she hasn't vaccinated her 1-year-old son, Camden and won't be doing so for the child she is currently pregnant with either.

Appearing on Fox Business she said: "You know what, I've read too many books about autism. There is a pediatric group called Homestead — Homestead or Homefront, now I have pregnancy brain I got them confused — they've never vaccinated any of their children, and they haven't had one case of autism. And now one in 88 boys is autistic. That's a really scary statistic."

But as the anti-vaccine movement grows so do the outbreaks of previously-eliminated diseases. New York City is currently seeing an outbreak of measles, a disease that had been considered eliminated in the United States in 2000. A whooping cough epidemic spread through California in 2010, also believed to be spread by children who had not been vaccinated. And then there was the 2009 measles outbreak in our own backyard

Choosing not to vaccinate your children is a deeply personal choice that will affect the health of your family. But that doesn't mean that parents who choose to vaccinate should do so without being aware of the side-effects associated with them.

Are all these outbreaks related to the anti-vaccine movement or do vaccines just not work?
