Common baby skin allergies

Peeling skin
During the first few weeks, your baby may have peeling or cracking of the skin, especially at the wrists and hands, ankles and feet. Over due babies seem to peel more than babies born closer to their due date. This is normal and no treatment is necessary.

Nappy Rash
Red and sore skin on a baby's bottom or genitals that is caused by the contact of urine and faeces with the skin.

Eczema
Eczema is a chronic skin disorder that involves scaly and itchy rashes. Eczema is also called atopic dermatitis. It usually indicates an allergy to something in the baby’s environment.

Urticaria
Raised areas of the skin that are often red, warm, and itchy. Urticaria is also known as hives. It is usually caused by an intense allergic reaction.

Cradle cap
Scaly or crusty skin on the top of the baby's head due to a normal buildup of sticky skin oils, scales, and dead skin cells.

Heat rash
This is a red or pink rash usually found on the body areas covered by clothing. It can occur if your baby is dressed too warmly or when the weather is very hot. It often itches and makes your baby uncomfortable.

Thrush
Thrush (known as candida) is caused by a yeast-like fungal infection which commonly affects the skin, bowel or genital areas of the body. In early infancy it presents as a nappy rash or mouth infection.
