Breastfeeding mom Dawn Holland was breastfeeding her son of 20 months in a booth at a local restaurant, when the manager ordered her to go to the restroom in order to avoid ‘indecent exposure’, or leave the restaurant, according to WXIA-TV
. When she refused, the manager called the police. Not in a mall, not in a church
Her native state of Georgia allows public breastfeeding, so the officer concerned left without arresting her, but Holland is livid she was told to go to the bathroom with her baby. In the end, she left without eating at the restaurant. The incident echoes a similar scene earlier this year in which a breastfeeding mom was told she couldn’t do it in a church.
We’ve heard of the toilet-feeding issue here before, too: Moms who are expressing while at work have been told by bosses to go to the loo when pumping. Many shopping malls have their baby changing (and feeding) areas in the toilets, and this has angered breastfeeding mothers. Breastfeeding moms have recently staged mass 'feed-ins'
in protest against being made to feel ashamed of breastfeeding in public, and celebrities such as Beyoncé
have been acting as celebrity breastfeeding advocates.
Take a look at our gallery
of breastfeeding celebs.
Not only do breastfeeding moms
take exception to having to feed in the one place where hygiene may be compromised, but they’re offended that the act of breastfeeding is still seen as ‘indecent’. Public toilets are hardly a calm, relaxing environment- they are frequently smelly, often flooded and dirty and definitely not designed for moms to provide a snack for a hungry baby.Where do you think moms should breastfeed when out and about?
