Fat-shaming or inspirational?

When Maria Kang posted a picture on her Facebook wall of herself with her three children her intention was clearly to provoke a response in her readers. Not only is the mother of three fit and toned, but she captioned the picture “What’s your excuse?”

A mom's job to be fit?

According to her Facebook page, Maria says that with three children it’s her job to be fit: In order to participate in a fun, full life with her kids, she needs energy and fitness.

The business owner is not a personal trainer, but she spends lots of time making sure she’s living out her own philosophy, and lean physique is proof of that. The problem is that her post sent many people into a spin, as they saw her attempts at inspiring her community as fat-shaming and bullying behaviour. 12, 000 comments later, the argument continues…

She’s unrepentant: In a brief apology she insists that she had to overcome many issues in order to achieve her goal, and that people hating the image are keeping themselves from enjoying a full life such as hers…

What do you think? Is Maria Kang’s Facebook image inspirational or mean?
