Sausages made from… baby poo?
Scientists discover baby poo can promote a healthy gut when used in food.
In one of those “you have to wonder how they made that creative leap
” studies, Spanish scientists have been exploring ways of using the bacteria found in baby poo to boost healthy bacteria in the body, reported Livescience
It’s not just theory, either. The team has already cooked up a batch of salami-type sausage using bacteria extracted from baby poo
, and they’re claiming it tastes just great!How...?
According to Livescience, many salamis and sausages get their tangy flavour from a bacterial fermentation process. Added to this is the adoption of probiotics such as the ones found in yoghurt. Probiotics are great in promoting digestive health among other positive bodily functions. However, for probiotics to work, they must be strong enough to survive the acidic digestive process.Brave taste testers
The scientists then discovered that human faeces are a great source of these bacteria. Using faecal samples from healthy babies, they discovered that infant poo
is richer in the bacteria Lactobacillus
. Using the bacteria cultured from the poop, the scientists created several different types of sausage
. Professional taste-testers said that the sausage was almost impossible to distinguish from similar types of sausage.
The strain of bacteria used produced 100 million cells per grain of sausage. The scientists also enjoyed their lab creations, although they are not currently marketing the sausage pending tests on the probiotic efficacy of the meat.
N.B. No ACTUAL faeces are used in the sausage- just bacteria extracted from baby poo and grown as a culture.Would you eat baby poo sausage for the probiotic effects?
