Iowa, US: Iowa mom Melody Lauer has developed a new class aimed at teaching new moms how to safely carry a weapon and a baby at the same time, according to the Daily Mail.
Careful, it's loaded
A mom of three, she says that she realised there was a need for new moms to learn how to “safely” holster a weapon while carrying a baby at the same time. She works in a gun shop and has a motto which says that if you’re carrying a baby on one side, you should holster your weapon on the other side. She claims that her method is helping pistol-toting mamas to carry weapons “responsibly”, and that the idea came from a recent case where a child had accidentally shot his mother.
Her seminars have proven to be so popular that she’d had to stop registration for new clients.
Kids and guns
The US has become notorious in a gun safety debate after several high-profile cases of children being involved in firearm-related injuries and deaths in recent months.
Even toddlers have managed to shoot parents and siblings despite claims that they would not have the strength required to depress a trigger.
Locally, there are far more strict laws in place to prevent children having access to firearms, although there are occasional incidents where children shoot other children.
The secret to avoiding gun-related accidents
Parents should always bear in mind the safety of other family members if firearms are present and adhere to regulations involving the safe storage of weapons. The best way to avoid accidents involving guns is not to have them in the home.
Whether weapons are present in the home or not, parents should teach their children never to handle weapons and to treat guns as loaded at all times.
Would you keep a loaded weapon around a baby?
