Once your baby is mobile, there’ll be no stopping him. He’ll be rooting through the kitchen cupboards, pulling things off coffee tables, and having a cold drink of water from the dog’s bowl before you know it.

The crawling stage is a wonderful leap of ability, and great fun to watch. Don’t worry if your baby doesn’t crawl beautifully in the conventional way at first. Many babies start by bottom shuffling or even go backwards before they get the hang of it.

Help it happen

  1. Encourage freedom of movement. Make sure he has enough space where there are no dangers such as stairs or exposed electrical sockets.
  2. Offer tons of  tummy time. Spending time face down on his tummy can assist your baby to go on to the crawling stage.
  3. Put an interesting object a short distance away from him, and allow him to reach for it.
  4. Don’t waste money on a walking ring. They can be dangerous if not monitored very carefully, and they get in the way of crawling practice.

A baby obstacle course

  • Put your baby on his tummy on a blanket on the floor.
  • Place his favourite toys just out of reach.
  • Put your hand behind his feet to give him something to push against if he tries to crawl.
  • Once he’s on his way you can create obstacles with cushions, which will help improve his confidence and agility.
