Your eyes are drooping and your bed is calling. But your baby is wailing away or your toddler thinks it’s time to play. Sleep can elude parents for years, unless we learn the tricks to getting babies relaxed and ready for a night of rest.
Here’s what to expect from birth to toddler age.

Newborn Your baby’s body needs regular feeds, so it’s not likely you’ll escape the 2am feeds for a while. And although newborns sleep up to 18 hours a day, they do it in three to four hour bursts. Take your cues from your baby for now. For more help, read the JOHNSON’S® Baby Newborn Sleep Guide.

Infant You’ll often hear the parents of a three month old declaring that he is now “sleeping through.” Your baby is now able to feel the difference between night and day, so this is a good time to start introducing a gentle routine.  For more advice on how to do this read the
Baby By the second half of his first year, your baby will start being more physically active during the day. He’ll probably rest well at night, but beware of your habits like rocking or feeding your baby to sleep, as they can cause problems later. To find out more about how babies of this age can get the rest they need, read the JOHNSON’S® Baby Baby Sleep Guide.

Toddler A tired toddler is a cranky one, so keep your routine as regular as possible. Toddlers respond well to a predictable sleepy time routine, For more on how to make bedtime special read the JOHNSON’S® Baby Toddler Sleep Guide.
