Do moms need lipstick?
What really matters changes when your kids are born.
I recently read an article about a family who lost everything in a house fire. This made me think how the importance of my material possessions has shifted since having kids.
What I get excited about now is completely different to what I got excited about before I had my twins. My top 5 things pre-kids
• Lipstick and Mascara
: always the first to say yes to a party, these are items I actually never left home without, you never know when the opportunity to go out could arise, a girl must be prepared!
: I spent hours creating playlists and downloading music, my iPod was my pride and joy. It was my friend while lying in bed trying to fall asleep, my gym companion and the only thing that got me through long haul flights.
: parties to be had and plans to be made...
• Gym membership
: a strangely social venue actually, I was a big people watcher, and the gym is a great place to do that. I particularly enjoyed eavesdropping on conversations between personal trainers and their clients.
: till noon preferably!
My top 5 things post kids
• Hand blender
: this has changed my life. I got one just before my kids went onto solids and it’s become one of my most used kitchen appliances since. I use it at least once a week. When my kids where very young, I used it to purée food and I now use it for soups, whipping cream and sneaking vegetables into my kids meals.
• Portable DVD player
: have you ever tried to do a 15 hour car trip with 2 toddlers
? For my kids- anything longer than 30 minutes is long distance. I do have rules. It’s for holidays only.
: I need some help with those dark circles from lack of sleep. My children have taken to rising with the sun lately. I have never been a morning person (see number 5 on the previous list)
• Bamboo steamer
: another useful kitchen item that changed my life. Its quick, easy, it’s an incredibly healthy
way to cook food for my kids.
• And my cellphone
makes the list again! I love my phone but for different reasons! You never know when a photo opportunity is going to arise. What are your essentials pre- and post- kids?
