The time has come for your curious toddler to spread his wings and go to nursery school. But is he really ready – and are you?

The most important thing to remember is that your child is an individual and should not be compared to other children his age. Always keep in mind what is best for your child – there is no real right or wrong time for your toddler to start nursery school.

If you are concerned that your child is not ready for preschool, then don’t rush him into it too soon because it could make him feel like a failure if he has trouble keeping up.

Is your child ready for nursery school?

  • Is your toddler potty trained? Some nursery schools only accept children that are.
  • Is he showing signs of independence? Or does he need you to be with him every moment of the day?
  • Does your toddler interact with other people easily? If your child is still very clingy consider taking him to a playgroup a few days a week to get used to other caregivers and children.
  • Can he follow simple instructions and follow a routine? Schedules are followed at nursery schools and your toddler will have to get used to moving from one activity to another.

How to find the right nursery school

You can get a list of the recommended nursery schools from your area’s primary schools and then make an appointment with the ones that appeal to you.

A few questions and points to look out for are:
  • The size and safety of the classrooms and playground.
  • Security at the gates and ask about their emergency situations policies.
  • What they get for lunch and ask to see the kitchen.
  • Cleanliness and safety in the toilet and basin area.
  • The teachers qualifications and the child-teacher ratio.
  • A timetable of what their daily routine will be.

What did you consider when choosing a nursery school?
