2nd child dies in faith healing tragedy
Faith healer couple loses 2 children to controversial practice.
Despite still being on probation following a 2009 involuntary manslaughter conviction after choosing prayer instead of medical assistance, contributing to the death of their child, a US couple who are members of a church which practices faith healing have lost another child, according to the Huffington Post
Lightning strikes in two places?
The couple’s first son, Kent, died of bacterial pneumonia 4 years ago. His symptoms had included coughing, congestion, crankiness and a loss of appetite. His parents said he was eating and drinking until the last day, and they had “thought he was getting better.” Following his death, a judge sentenced them to 10 years probation.
8-month-old Brandon died last week after suffering from diarrhoea and breathing problems for at least a week, and stopping eating. Herbert and Catherine Schaible allegedly confessed to investigators that “they prayed to God
to make Brandon well instead of seeking medical attention”.
While the full details of the latest tragedy are still being investigated, the couple are said to be loving parents, although they are active members of a church which preaches faith healing. An extract from a sermon available on the First Century Gospel Church’s website says: “"It is a definite sin to trust in medical help and pills; and it is real faith to trust on the Name of Jesus for healing."The dangers of prayer
While some medical professionals encourage faith as part of a healing process which includes
formal medical treatment, failing to seek medical care at all and, instead, relying solely on prayer
is extremely dangerous.
