Spring, friend or foe?
Springtime in a house full of little ones offers some good and some bad...
It’s finally springtime again and over and above the normal Spring things, like spring-cleaning, I’ve noticed a few other trends that have crept up on us with little kids in the house.

Less sleep. The number one issue is our 2-year-old’s waking-up time. Since he gets up when the birds start singing, we have to get up at that time too. Did you know the birds wake up before the sun? Try sleeping for an extra 5 minutes with little toddler fingers lifting your eyelids…

Mossie attacks. Springtime mosquitoes absolutely love kiddie blood.  Baby blood even better. So, with the return of those blood-sucking-sleep-deprivers, it’s time to start with the chemical warfare in our home again. I’ve got a liquid mosquito repellent that plugs into a wall socket.  Since I have baby-mush-brain and can’t remember to switch them on or off, they are plugged into time switches. Now all I need to remember is resetting them when the power has been off, but those mozzies are quite good in letting me know when I’ve forgotten. Usually at 4 in the morning.

Wet pants. Another biggie for Spring is potty training. Since my youngest son is now officially 2, I have to start thinking about potty training (again).  My gut is telling me that he’s not quite ready for the big step yet, but believe me it’s not something you want to put off until the winter.  I went through up to 4 sets of clothes a day while potty training my oldest boy at 3.  It’s not an experience I would like to repeat during winter and all those layers.

Less washing. The boys are definitely creating less washing now that it’s only shorts and T-shirts.  No more vests, shirts, sweaters, pants, socks, you get the drift…

Creative haircuts. Springtime means shorter hair cuts for the boys, no need to keep those ears warm anymore. After this weekend it’s obvious that mommy has become rusty and need to relearn those hair cutting skills…

Afternoons outdoors.  Swimming for the kids are a fantastic way of wearing them out, so that mommy can rest when they go to bed early. The kids can also play outside for longer with the sun going down later. The mud cakes in the backyard. The playful splashing with the garden hose while watering the fruit trees...

There are flowers being brought to mommy with grubby little hands…

You know what? I definitely like Spring!

Which is your favourite season with your family?
