Is breast really best?

Formula and breastfeeding moms often have this rather heated discussion. But who's right?

When I asked our Facebook fans which they prefer for their kids, formula or breastmilk, these were their answers.

• Breast milk. No cleaning and sterilizing bottles. And it's always the correct temperature. Plus, it's for free! Ashleigh

• Breastmilk. It's easy, convenient, has all the vitamins, always warm, free and I’ve heard that a breastfeeding baby has low chances of getting sick and constipation. Ongz

• Breast is healthier. I breastfeed both my boys and it's much cheaper. Lewis

• Breastfeeding is healthier, cheaper and easy to maintain. Reitumetse

While there were moms who agreed that both breastmilk and formula can work, the majority agreed that breastmilk is the answer.

What's wrong with formula?

In order to get another perspective I asked our Twitter followers if there were any pro-formula moms willing to weigh in on the debate. And there were.

• For ease, for those who can't breastfeed - why add guilt and make people feel inadequate? You do the best you can whatever that may be. Cathy

• My son wouldn't latch properly and lost 400g in 4 days and showed signs of dehydration. I did what I had to for the health of my baby. Bronwen

• Moms should do what works. Don't think there is a better rule for parenting than this one? Too many rules and unrealistic expectations are not good for anyone. Tracy

• Breastfeeding is definitely not for everyone. Anika

At the end of the day, what is best for both mom and baby physcially, mentally and emtionally is best. I believe that no new mom should be made to feel guilty for choosing to breast or formula feed. Instead support, learn and focus on raising a happy and healthy baby.
