Best and worst celebrity parents
Our opinions about celebs can change when they become parents.
By Scott Dunlop
One of our favourite celeb parents at the moment is Pink. Who would have thought that the passionate rocker would have turned into such an awesome mom? Not only has she shown herself to be determined to breastfeed, but she has even stopped a show to help a crying child. It can be hard to picture how that musician or actor you adore will be as a parent, but the experience seems to help many of those celebs round off their personalities.

Pictures can tell a thousand stories
There are entire websites dedicated to taking pics of celebs with their babies, and you can’t always tell what’s going on in a series of blurred pictures taken with a huge lens, but the collective paparazzi pics tell a story of their own: A celeb mom may be seen looking “worn out” or “dishevelled”, but, if in every pic she’s with her child, that’s pretty impressive.
Another celeb who seems to be enjoying parenthood is Ben Affleck. In fact, parenthood appears to have made him even more attractive to his fans, who coo about what a great dad he is.
It’s one thing to see a celebrity storming the stage or the red carpet, but quite another to see them with their kids doing the regular things parents do. It doesn’t cause them to lose that magic, but it allows us to see them as people, just like us. Parents who have placed the parenting experience above everything else.
Of course, a few pictures may not reveal what's going on behind the scenes.
When things go bad...
Not every celebrity manages to make the transition well. The complicated pressure of maintaining a public image can cause some celebrities to palm off their kids on nannies while, for the mom or dad, life just goes on. In previous decades, image consultants and managers made an effort to downplay the parenthood role of a celeb, for fear it would detract from their sex appeal- take John Lennon, for example: manager Brian Epstein encouraged Lennon to keep his first marriage and baby secret.
There have been celebs whose children have attempted to “divorce”, so acrimonious were their relationships.
The current trend is far more child-friendly: Celebrities who become parents are encouraged and supported. Whether they prefer to keep those kids out of the public domain or not is their choice, but fans accept that the leading actors, actresses and band frontmen are as capable with a pram as they are with a microphone.
