Don't wear that, you're distracting the boys!
Girls may get reprimanded for what they're wearing as they're giving boys 'the wrong impression'.
For as long as I can remember, I loved summer because little shorts and dresses was my favourite attire for summer.
Neither my mother nor father was ever bothered by the way I dressed because it was never seen as “slutty” – I never looked untidy or inappropriate.
Then school happened. We were granted a casual day at school where we were allowed to wear absolutely anything that our hearts desired.
We were handed letters that were meant for our parents that included the date of the casual day, what the casual day was for and how much we were expected to pay (yes, we had to pay a fee), but right at the bottom of the letter in capital letters and bold, read:
PLEASE NOTE; ALL GIRLS ARE TO AVOID WEARING ANY DRESSES, MINI SKIRTS, SHORTS OR TANK TOPS. THANK YOU IN ADVANCE.
There was no explanation as to why this rule was enforced, it was just stated.
To me, it was unfair; why were only the girls told what not to wear?
Casual day, I decided that I was going to seek answers from my teacher. Much to my surprise she told me that girls weren't allowed to wear anything that would distract the boys in any way.
I was quite upset, because if I knew it was about the boys being distracted I would file a complaint. I would adhere, but I would definitely file a complaint.
Boys are seldom confronted for the way they act towards girls; we are so often shamed for what we wear. When a girl gets sexually assaulted by a man, there is always a question of whether she provoked him or not.
Instead of only stressing the fact that girls should dress appropriately around boys, we should also school the boys about respecting girls.
To this day I feel scared to wear a dress when taking public transport because I'm afraid that I'm sending some twisted message to whoever sees me.

Should girls avoid wearing ‘revealing’ clothing?
