Growing up we had a big 5 liter ice cream container that we stored all our Legos in. But all we had at the time where the blocks. None of these fancy Star Wars or Harry Potter Legos. You had to build your own houses or cars from whatever bricks you had. Now you can walk into a toy store and there are Legos for boys and Legos for girls. The Legos for girls left much to be desired. Everything was pink and purple and all you got to do was clean house and go shopping.
7-year-old Charlotte Benjamin was not happy about this situation and complained about it to Lego a few months ago. In her letter she said "All the girls did was sit at home, go to the beach, and shop, and they had no jobs but the boys went on adventures, worked, saved people, and had jobs, even swam with sharks. I want you to make more Lego girl people and let them go on adventures and have fun ok!?!"
Well Lego got the message loud and clear and have created an all-female "Research Institute" set to be released this month. Girls can now play as either a paleontologist, a chemist or an astronomer. That's pretty damn cool of Lego and it's about time they acknowledged that women contribute a lot more to society than just making house. Children learn through play. They learn about the world and society so this sends a message to little girls that they don't have to be put in to little stereotyped boxes. They can be scientists or whatever else they want to be.
