"Respect my religion, please!"

A few weeks ago, my nephew went on a play date at a school friend's house. He had a great time and when he came home his mom asked what he had for lunch and he said quite nonchalantly, "ham sandwiches".

Now to most moms this wouldn't be a big deal, but when you're a Muslim mom and someone's given your kid pork, you have a little bit of a wobble. My nephew knew that as a Muslim he's not allowed to eat pork, but he hadn't known that ham, pork and bacon were all the same thing.

And while my sister thought that it was her fault and that she should have specifically told the other mom that he's not allowed any pork products, but I think that it's pretty common knowledge that Muslims don't eat pork and it's just disrespectful to give the kid ham. If a Hindi kid came to my house I'd make sure I didn't serve beef and if you're just not sure, why not just do what another mom I know does: get take-aways.

How do handle the food situation when a child from a different religion comes to play?
