In the first case of its kind, a clinically obese child has been removed from his parents care by authorities, who say that the child’s parents weren’t doing enough to help the child control his weight, according to SAPA.
The Cleveland primary school child is said to be at risk from conditions related to obesity, such as diabetes and hypertension.
Lawyers for the child’s mother have hit back, saying that the social workers acted inappropriately by removing the child and placing him in foster care.
Obesity and its related conditions are on the increase in South Africa, as a result of sedentary lifestyles and poor diets. Parents should, in theory, assist their child in eating healthily and encouraging exercise.
What do you think? Is obesity an issue for the authorities to address in such an extreme fashion as placing obese kids in foster care?
