Girl disqualified from soccer tournament for looking like a boy

accreditation

Sometimes the people who inhabite this planet truly astound me. I'm often left speechless at the absurdity of this world and just how nuts it can be.

The latest thing that has my mouth hanging open at the complete ridiculousness of the situation is of 8-year-old Mili Hernandez, whose soccer team was disqualified from the finals of a local tournament because of her short hair. The organisers were convinced she was a boy. And no amount of proof could dissuade the organisers of their stupidity.

As Parent24 editor's 7-year-old would say, "Are you kidding me with jokes?!".

As this story started circulating, some of the biggest female soccer stars voiced their support and encouragement to Mili.

Abby Wambach and Mia Hamm, two of America's most celebrated female soccer stars posted messages on social media:

In response to Rachel Daly's tweet with the hashtags #BecauseShortHairStillDoesntCare and #ImWithMili, South African player Janine Van Wyk, posted that maybe she should've been disqualified as well because this whole thing is insane.

So despite the tournament being over and there's nothing to actually be done about the situation - the greatest take away for young Mili is that she is supported by some of the greatest female soccer stars on the planet and should not be defeated by stupid people in this world.

What are your thoughts on this situation? Have your daughters been unfairly discriminated against? Send us your stories to chatback@parent24.com and they could be published.
