Beating the bully
Being the victim of a bully can spoil your school days. Here's how to deal with them.
This mother is worries that her son is suicidal about being bullied. She asks our expert for help.
My son is being bullied
My 13 year old son is known by all as very gentle ,mild tempered and well mannered boy. Because of this he seems to be targeted by the"cool kids" since grade R. After years of building him up again he attended a dance where a child filmed him dancing which he then circulated around the school. My son is know being mocked. He has been so hurt for so long by bullies he said he wants to die that he feels like a freak. I am so scared that this might be the last straw.
It is clear that his basic human right to have his dignity respected and protected has been violated, and it would be a shame if the school has not acted on this. There is obviously a need for a group intervention at the school where a number of issues are addressed, namely; respect for others, human dignity, equality, and co-operative teamwork.
With regard to your son, it is my suggestion that he see a therapist where he can work through some issues of assertiveness, self-image and self-confidence. You will find a lot of literature on EQ on the web. Find some activities that you can do with your son to enhance this process. Try "The Emotional Intelligence Workbook for Children" by Ronel Le Roux and Rina De Klerk, or "The Habits of Emotional Intelligence: Student Workbook" by Jackie Beere
