Whether it comes to school fees, discipline and governing bodies, the law is actually much simpler than we sometimes think. Almost everything that governs what your child's school can or can't do is contained in The South African Schools Act.

Very often as parents we feel that we are facing the giant obstacle of a system that doesn't favour us. In fact the law is pretty fair, but some schools don't stick to it - either because they don't know the law, or because they consciously flout it.

It's worth taking a few minutes to download and read The South African Schools Act so you come to any disputed situation with the same legal background as those you need to discuss the matter with.

Some of the subjects covered in the Act include:

  • Admission policies
  • Language policies
  • Suspension and expulsion
  • The composition of a governing body
  • Finances and budgets

If you have any questions relating to Education Law, pose them to Phillipa Tucker.

Do you think parents are informed about the law? Should schools be more open about informing parents about the law?
