Some people have way more time on their hands than I've ever had. I mean, my 5-year-old would never sit still long enough for me to whip her hair into the double heart French braid, the zipper braid updo, the braided flower corsage or the hour-glass braid – Dutch braids, feather braids, rope braids and a double twist, anyone?

That's given I had the skill, which I will now never acquire. For most of the sculptured hairstyles you'll also need lots of hair to play with, which we're not particularly blessed with. And, shudder, imagine undoing the masterpiece at the end of the day. Girl, you'd better walk around like that for a week!

So the quest was on to find something fun we could do with my daughter's long, thin hair, which would enable a bit of bonding time and make her feel like a real-life Rapunzel, in just a few minutes and requiring very little skill, just a wee bit of practice. Bonus points for those do's that will survive an hour's playing on the jungle gym.

Here then my favourites:

The woven ponytail:

Perfect for school! Our favourite is the first one.

The flower braid and low ponytail:

My little girl loves this one. It's easy and super romantic.

The faux French braid:

With some practice I can do the French braid, but this is a fun alternative.

Easy waterfall twist (a waterfall braid cheat):

This is not actually as hard as it looks.

Easy fishtail braid:

The best way to describe this braid is that you're working with 2 strands, and you take a small piece from one strand and pull it across to the other side, and vice versa. You want to keep the X pattern throughout.
