Readers respond to Ban the Smack! by Scott Dunlop.
I don't agree. I was spanked as a child my brother was spanked and my sister was too, all 3 of us are normal well-adapted adults.
I am no specialist, I am a first time mom and my son is still very small, but I believe that if the time comes there is nothing wrong with spanking. I also believe in "picking your battles" and not to use spanking alone but to incorporate different forms of discipline (eg. naughty chair method).
Why is our government putting time and effort into this. Why not train soon to-be-parents, why not hold seminars or workshop on how to discipline your child?
Parents are too scared to discipline their kids, they send these kids to school where it becomes the teacher's problem. The teacher is already overworked and under paid and can't discipline a class of 30-40 kids so we end up with kids that become adults with no sense of wrong.
I am aware that there are people out there that don't know when to stop and that can't control there rage. That is why I suggest to hold seminars and workshops at clinics and hospitals as parents go for check-ups or get schools involved at parent evenings. We need to educate parents so that they don't "kill there children".
