Scariest laundry experience

It was a few days after my daughter Kaylin’s 8th birthday and I was quickly putting a washing on before taking her to town to spend some of her birthday money.

“Mum, have you seen my purse?” came the call from along the passage.

We searched high and low for that purse and my daughter was getting more and more frantic as it contained the six, crisp R100 notes and a couple of gift voucher cards that she had received from very generous friends and relatives only a few days before.

I thought that maybe I should look in the washing machine, not wanting to believe that I could have done such a thing but realizing that it could possibly have been picked it up with a bundle of dirty clothes.

Sure enough, there it was, floating around on the top of the soapy water and my daughter promptly burst into tears!  Being a top loader I could thankfully reach in and snatch it out, and I spent the next half an hour blow drying the money so that we could go to the shops!

It was with trepidation that we used one of the gift cards at the local toy store, but luckily it worked.

I suppose we gave new meaning to the term “money laundering”!
