My daughter received a stuffed ape as a gift from her grandmother’s friend a few years ago (she was aged 3 at the time). She immediately ‘bonded’ with the toy and the two of them became inseparable and he was named Apie.
He has to go with us everywhere and has thus travelled all over South Africa (Cape Town, Eastern Cape, Kruger National Park and has even been to Namibia twice).
He is part of all our family celebrations (including his own place setting at the x-mas table). He was once almost forgotten in a tree in Namibia and is now put on a leash whenever we travel (strapped to the car to ensure he does not escape again).
He once decided to go to our church’s school to play with other stuffed toys and was lost for 6 months. My daughter cried her eyes out and could not live with the fact that she’s lost her favourite toy.
Luckily for her, a friend saw Apie amongst the other toys and the two were re-united again. After that incident, he was given a name tag with my cell number in case he gets lost again.
He also has hand-made clothes (a summer t-shirt and a long-sleeve winter shirt with the words: I was born to be cute).
My daughter turned 10 this year but we continue to celebrate Apie’s birthday every year. She has promised that she’ll never grow too old for him and he will always be part of her life.
