Cindy, I am a dad with a 5 and half year old and am occasionally seeing the same pattern as what you describe. This behaviour escalates when I am away on business. I usually start with time out, then threats, then I follow through by taking away prized toys. If it continues to the point that neither my wife nor I are getting through I warn him carefully and clearly and count down to 4. If he has not responded favourably by the end of the countdown, I calmly get the wooden spoon and take him to his room, where he gets 3 paddles on his bum and for 2 weeks we have calm again. He always responds favourably and comes to apologise. He gets told that we love him regardless of what has happended and we dont hold grudges. Then the whole process starts over ;-) Good luck.
