Hi, my daughter turned 5 on 8 Jan this year, and goes to grade R next year. However, I have been wondering whether she could not perhaps start grade 1 next year, given that she is a bright child - concentrates well, can write her name and starting with other words etc. Should I be exploring this option or are their good reasons not to? Anthea

Answer

Generally it is best to wait till a child is fully 6 before going to grade 1. An extra year of maturity helps with emotional, social and leadership development. Do not rush – she can only play for 6 years, but has to work for the rest of her life.
