Hi My daughter in Grade 2 has ADD. She has does not seem to be able to tolerate the medication prescribed for ADD. Are there any schools in Cape Town who do cater for these types of children? The advice I am given is send her to a private school. The classes at the private schools in my area are bigger than her classes in a state school. Thank – you

There are Social Schools in Cape Town who do cater to children with ADD. However there are often long waiting lists and strict procedures in applying to these schools. If you feel your daughter would be better in such a school, you will need to speak to her current teacher, get a referral to an Educational Psychologist for an assessment and then these people will liaise directly with the Department as to which school is best.

Before exploring this route, it may be worth considering the diet your daughter is on. Have you tried taking gluten and dairy out of her diet? Has this made a difference? Have you discussed your concerns about the medication with your GP? Has another medication been suggested? There are several different ADD medications on the market and they each have different side effects. What other avenues have you explored regarding routines, medication and diets? All these questions will help determine whether a Special School is the right step.

Also bear in mind that, while classes may well be smaller, a class of only 15 children, but with several ADD and ADHD students in it can be more of a challenging environment than a class of forty children with only one or two ADD/ADHD members.

My best advice would be to do as much research into a variety of strategies, talk to your doctor and your daughter's teacher and school, an educational psychologist and only once you have explored all the avenues available, make a decision.

Hi St. George's Grammar School, Richmond street, Mowbray is an excellent school catering for mainstream and special needs learners. Grade R to Matric. What a special place. Too much to tell. Visit them for yourself and find out.

The best school I have dealt with is Du Natos in Bellville. Phone them on 021 919 9585. The staff is dedicated and they limit class sizes to approx 14 per class. My son is there and the improvement from public school to Du Natos is unbelieveable.
