I don’t think I can afford OT for my 7 year-old daughter. Will my medical aid pay for it? I think it would help her to do better at school.

Answer

Yes, medical aids do cover occupational therapy, but check your scheme’s benefit structure, to determine the portion that they will pay. The OT will start with an assessment of your child to determine which areas need to be the focus of therapy. She will then sit and discuss the results with you and help you decide what is the best therapy regimen for your daughter and your family’s needs. In many cases the assessment takes up a lot of the medical aid funds allocated by your scheme, so investigate this first. You can ask the OT to do an assessment that is within a price structure that will allow you some scope with therapy. Discuss your benefits with the OT and work out the most realistically affordable plan. Be prepared to pay something towards the therapy. Most OT’s request that you pay them on invoice, and that you then claim back from your medical aid. Find an OT in your area so that therapy is convenient, but also approach more than one, find out their rates up front, and see which is your best option.
