How to wean

Hi Susan, My son is 4 months old and he is exclusively on breast milk - drinking from both the breast & the bottle. I return to work in 1 month's time and will not be in a position to express at work. I would like to wean off the breast (to formula) for the daytime feeds and am hoping to continue with the 1st morning and last evening feeds from the breast once I am back at work. I basically have 5 weeks left to master the weaning process and would like to know what the best way is to avoid painful, swollen breasts? Should I just stop completely, or should I continue to breast feed less and less each day so the milk production slows down? Also, will there still be adequate milk production for the morn and evening feeds if I stop with the daytime feeds? Thanks in advance and looking forward to your feedback!

weaning 10month old

My 10month old son is gnawing at my nipples, please advise on how to wean him off his night feeds. It's strenuos as it is painful, because he sucks more for comfort if anything especially at night. I understand the nutrific benefits, but it is honestly no longer a pleasant experience for me. Both our sleeps are disturbed if he loses grip of my nipple at night and refuses a dummy. However, if I am not in the room, he sleeps with his dad with nearly no fuss having had a bottle and the occasional pat when his sleep breaks. He is on formula and only has breast when im home after work, exclusively weekends etc.

Doesnt want to drink

Hi Susan Maybe you can help me, I am writing you this out of sheer desperation, my daughter is now 3 months old, she was born 5 weeks prem after a extremely difficult pregnancy. From day one we had had feeding issues, at first she wouldn’t latch when trying to breastfeed, the nurses at the hospital said it was because she was prem and her mouth was sensitive. So I expressed milk instead, since then even though I tried every day she still wouldn't wouldn’t latch. On top of that it was taking her minimum 2.5 hours per feed, on top of that she has reflux that looks like she is bringing up the entire bottle, and cramps to go with it. After changing bottles, teats, sizes etc, I have gotten her down to about 30 - 45 minutes, which is much better, but now she doesn’t want to drink my breast milk. I have tried her on lactogen and Nan as I am back at work so I try and express as much as possible night for the next day, but she still needs the formula, but now she doesn’t want to drink my milk at all and I don't know what to do and the cramps make it even worse, some night she only takes in 80 or 90ml of breast milk or formula and she just cries from the cramps. Any suggestions?

Breastmilk Supply & Demand

I am the proud new mommy of a 6kg 3 month old little boy that has been breastfeeding exclusively since birth. Unfortunately, I have had to go back to work already, so I am now trying to express sufficient milk for the 6-8 hours we're apart. This is not going well though: I often don't get more than 220ml, and the left breast won't express at all! I have tried natural options (including drinking copious amounts of Jungle Juice) but nothing seems to work. Is there anything else you can suggest (people have been recommending Eglonyl)? I really want him breastfed for another 9 months at least. Please help.

7 month old still waking up every 2 hours

Hi. My little girl is 7 months old, still being breastfed and is on solids. She use to sleep well as a newborn then she started waking up every two hours for her night feeds. Between 5 & 6 months she use to only wake up twice - sleep by 9 wake at 2 and then at 5 for a feed. Now for the past month we are back to the old routine of every 2 hours. Is this normal for breastfeeding babies. I'm thinking maybe she needs to eat more during the day but when I tried increasing her intake she either wastes it or if I continue forcing it she throws it up. Help please I feel like a zombie with the lack of sleep. I am back at work now but only half day and giving her a bottle is out of the question as I have tried and she refuses it at all. She prefers to drink from a cup.

How much to express?

Hi My little boy is just over 3 months old and being exclusively breastfed. Hes a heavy little thing weighing 7.5kgs already! I have started back at work and am expressing his feeds, how much should I be expressing per feed and how often should he be feeding? I just feel like at the moment I can't keep up with his demand. I used to feed on demand and am wandering if that was a bad idea because I can't seem to get him into a semi routine. The other problem is he is also still waking up at night every 3 hours, I try comfort him, use his dummy but all he wants is to feed. How do I know if he is eating to much? My paediatrician told me a chubby breastfed baby is a healthy baby but I am starting to wonder if he's so chubby because I'm feeding him to much. I work and live in the bush so I'm not close at all to the paediatrician. I would really like to breastfeed him exclusively for 6 months but if this broken sleep is going to continue I might end up having to take naps under my office desk!!

My daughter has been spitting up

My daughter who is 7 weeks old, has been spitting up after almost every feed. It seems like she brings up most of the milk she takes in if not all. We do not know what to do, she doesn't seem unhappy and smiles with us when we speak to her, however there are times when she will cry and refuse to drink from my wife's breast. Should we go see a paed or first wait it out.

6 month old not drinking enough

My six month old is not finishing his bottle feeds. He’s on formula and has been doing fine up until 2 days ago. He eats his cereal in the morning and his solids in the afternoon but only drink a 100 ml of his formula when feeding him his bottle, which is about four times a day. Should I be concerned that he’s not getting enough milk and could be dehydrated? Or do you think he’s teething?

Weaning 1yr old

Hi Susan I am planning to wean my 1 year old daughter over the next few weeks and would like your opinion on what is best to substitute the breastmilk for, when weaning. Some advice I've had is that full-fat organic cow's milk is ok to offer her from a year old, some suggest formula. I'd prefer not to go the formula route but if you advise that it would be better, please let me know Thanks!

Baby doesnt want to breastfeed

Ok so baby is now merely 2 days old and she did want to latch on my breasts. What she did was she would take the nipple, start sucking noisily and then spit it out, So I got worried that she is not feeding and put her on the bottle with formula ( I didnt have a breast pump as I didn't think I would need one, been leaking since 28 weeks.) So the nipple on the bottle was latex. She doesn't seem to be affected by the formula and sleeps well with no signs of discomfort. Ok this was my thinking pattern. Give her the bottle and try to get her to take the breast before giving it the next time after giving up after half an hour of struggling. Where bottles are concerned she does not want anything to do with a silicone nipple, only takes latex of a certain size. Obviously now my breast are engorged, extremely sensitive and lumpy. Getting a pump tomorrow and as far as I can read I do not pump it out completely. Not that I think I would be able to stand the pain that long. When I do get the breast milk I will take her off the breast milk completely and only give her milk by bottle, Does anyone agree with this kind of thinking and why can it be that she is so fussy about size and shapes of nipples?

breastmilk - drying up.

I have a 5 month old breastfed baby. About 6 weeks ago I noticed a decrease in my breastmilk. I used to feed baby and express at least 3 times a day as my breasts were full. I still express 3 times a day but much less than i used to. I'm back at work and would like to continue to have my baby drink breast milk instead of formula, but i'm currently not getting enough milk expressed as what she needs. I started taking Eglynyl about a month ago, not much of a change in the milk production, instead I've now gained 6kgs and I have joint ache daily. I've gone to our biggest pharmacy and they do not have Fenugreek tablets which i've read about. Is there something else on the market that i can try? Also, i've also read that my breast milk will completly dry up if i stop the Eglynol, is this true? I've also tried a herbal tablet called Prolak, but this too didn't increase my milk production. Please help

Reflux

My 2 month old baby has been having re-flux from about 5 weeks. His paed gave him a course of Altosec capsules, which helps for a limited period. I have started NAN AR, very reluctantly as I did not want to introduce formula so early, but seeing him projectile every feed after I breastfeed became too much and too exhausting. I follow all the steps of how to feed, but it seems t make very little difference. What else can I do or try?

Bottle feeding a breastfed baby

My baby is currently 5 and a half months old. From the age of 2 months, we have tried to give her a bottle (with breast milk) Up to today, my baby refuses to drink from a bottle. I've tried over 10 different bottles and teats, tried different types of milk and other liquids but nothing seems to work. My baby plays and bites the teats and doesn't drink from it. She has tried and occationally gets a few ml's in. We feed her with a medicine dropper as I'm back at work and not home to feed her. I express and leave the milk with the nanny who tries the bottle everyday, but ends up feeding her with the medicine dropper. She only manages to get down between 50 to 80mls of milk at her feeds which i believe is very low. Do you have any advise on how i can get her to take the bottle? How much milk should she be drinking in one day? I have started her on solids, she has purity/cereal 3 times a day. We have even tried starving her, but she just gets frantic or falls asleep crying.

Milk Production

Hi there, I have been giving my 9 month daughter breast milk all her life with the aid of a breast pump and Espiride. However, if I miss a pill or two for a day my milk drops drastically (From 600 mls at night to only @250/300 mls and morning from 500mls to only 200) what can i do to naturally produce enough milk, although she is eating very well she still consumes up to a litre of milk in 24 hours. Rice Cereal

My baby is 11 weeks old. I breastfeed him, and since his 7th week I have also been giving him a teaspoon of rice cereal (mixed with breast milk) in the morning and evening (on recommendation of my paediatrician, in an attempt to stretch his feeding times) - while he gives us a good stretch during the night (7pm/2am/6am); he is still wanting to feed every 2-3 hours during the day (6am/ 8am/ 10am/ 1pm/ 3pm/ 5pm) - am I not producing enough milk at a time to satisfy his appetite? We tried giving him formula on 2 occasions, both times he screamed for an hour (I guess cramps) and still wanted his next feed at the usual time.

Weaning

Hi there...please help!! I have to return to work in 10 days time and I cannot get my 16 week old baby to take a bottle. I have been breastfeeding exclusively for 4 months and would like to continue morning and evening breast feeds like I did with my first daughter howerver she refuses to take a bottle at all for the day feeds. I have tried various things - different teats, a cup, letting Dad try, letting Gran try (while I leave the house), different positions, formula, breastmilk but nothing seems to work. Everytime the bottle comes near her she screams as though she is petrified. She does not use a pacifier/dummy so the teat is a bit unfamiliar. I was wondering if there are any specialists in JHB that could assist me in weaning her as I can't walk out on her when I go back to work knowing that she is going to be upset. My first child was very different and didn't put up a fight at all. I breastfed exclusively for 5 months and then a combination until 9 months. Please assist.

transitioning from breast feeding to formula

Hi. I am going back to work in 1 weeks time and have been trying to get my 4-month old daughter onto a formula for the past 6 weeks. unfortunately she vomits every formula out... i've tried Nan, S26, Infacare, Isomil and Novolac AR with no luck. cannot express enough breast milk to sustain 3 feeds in the day while i am at work. Any advice on where to go from here would be very helpful. for now i am going to try giving her small amounts of formula and topping up with breast milk to see if i can get her system used to the novolac AR. Regards, Shobna

Breastfeeding and weaning

My baby is almost 9 month old, she has lowered her day milk supply. She used to take 3 150 ml bottles of formula, now it has gone down to 1 a day and it worries me. I breastfeed her at night since I am at home then. I get told that maybe we overfeed her during the day that is why she is not interested in the formula, she eats cereal in the morning has a veggie lunch and supper, I have added an odd egg or fruit as a snack mid-morning. Despite all of that she still wakes me up about 5 times a night when she used to wake me once when she was 3 months old. I am tired.

Alfalfa to increse milk

I am exclusively breastfeeding my 8 month son. He is on 3 meals a day which he started at 6 months. I am a working mom who expresses for him to take to school the following day. My period came back soon after I started him on solids and I have noticed that just before my period starts I have a dramatic drop in my milk supply. A homoeopath suggested I take 10 drops of alfalfa tonic three times a day to help with my supply. Is this ok to take and will it work?

3 month old rejects my breast

I have been struggling to breastfeed since my baby was born. Currently she is rejecting me, she onlt takes my breast at night and for about a minute or so. Bring my milk back

Hi, my son is four months old i was breastfeeding. I asked the nurse i was seeing to put me on a contraceptive and she put me on Triphasil. Within a matter of a week or two i went from full leaking breasts to a couple of drops of milk. Im now seeing another nurse who is utterly shocked that the nurse before put me on triphasil as she says thats what dried my milk up. My son is nw on formula for a couple of weeks, is there anything that would work to bring my milk back and would my son drink it? Please please im desprate. Thanx

What are the right reasons to stop?

I read your answers regularly and find you often advice women to not stop breastfeeding even moms of babies that are 22 months old. I breastfeed my little girl. She is 8 months old and when I started breastfeeding my goal was to feed her till 8 months. Now I've reached that goal and I find myself wondering what to do now. I enjoy the experience, but I also work full-time and expressing at work is starting to take its toll and I would also like a little bit of myself for myself again before we start planning our next little one. Also I don't want my little girl to be 3 and still feeding from me. Yet all these reasons seem either selfish or wrong. What would be the right reasons and the right time to stop?

Oral Thrush (Correction)

Since my son was six weeks (he's now 5 months), he's had persistent oral thrush. Mycostatin and generic (Nystacid) drops do not work - ie do not even clear the visible thrush. Daktarin clears the visible thrush, but it always recurs after a few days, even after a full week's treatment. I've used Nystacid and vinegar wash on the nipples too, even though I don't have any noticeable symptoms of thrush. All bottles, dummies etc are boiled. Breast pads changed each time, new feeding bra every day, burp cloths, bibs and wiping cloths changed regularly. I've also been giving him probiotic drops. I also threw away all my expressed frozen breast milk and did not express or use bottles for a period of over a month, while treating as above. What else should I try? Must I stop breastfeeding?

My baby is 8wks and i breastfed exclusively from birth. The last wk however, she's been crying and fussing at my breast. Sometimes she'll drink a bit, but i'm worried that she's not getting enough hindmilk. I gave her formula today out of desperation and she had no problem drinking? It's my 3rd child and i breastfed the others without problems. My milkflow is also good. She weighed 3kg at birth and only gained 500g at 7wks. What can it be?! Breast & Bottle Feeding

Hi Susan I have two problems, hope you can guide me correctly. I believe that breast milk is the best by far, and want to pro long my baby's(4months) intake of Breast milk, but I feel that she's not getting enough after work she will stay on the breast for almost 2hrs. And wake up at least twice during the night for a feed, I did a test to see what I suspect to be true, I fed her cereal before her bedtime and gave her breastmilk as a top up(1hr feeding) and she slept through the night, when I stopped she woke up at least twice, and she wakes up by 05:30-06:00am every morning hungry as if I never fed her during the night. I need something to increase my milk, it wud be great if it does not affect baby in a negative way. Please help. Secondly, Baby refuses to take the bottle at all, I asked my mom, neighbours and even my cousin (looks after her during the day) to try her she still refuses she'll cry from beginning to end-usually last 45mins. She perspires alot, perspiration dripping down her face and tears running down her cheeks, she turns red and kicks and screams. I tried to give her from a cup/ sppon she only wants me to breastfeed her, I returned to work recently t/4 I'm unable to be with her 24/7 if I cud I wud, but that's not an option right now. My cousin is giving her purity fruits and Cereal (1-2 teaspoons only) and she's fine and feeds her milk with a syringe, but she has to chat with her to occupy her otherwise she'll start again. This whole episode is very traumatic to me, I can just imagine what it's doing to her. Please can you give me some hints... I'm a desperate MOM!

Eglynol or not to Eglynol

I have 2 kids and pregnant with the 3rd. Ages 1 and 3. I have had to take Eglynol with both pregnancies, with side affects including excessive weight gain (which made me extremely depressed), and it was very difficult to wean myself off the Eglynol. I have had the experience of having to take the eglynol because i produce far too little milk or no milk at all without it sadly. Im in a very difficult situation as i would love to breastfeed again, but fear the side affects, and my mental state of health, but how do i justify that when breast is best....please advise.

Want to breastfeed twins or is it too late?

Hi. I am a mother of twins. They are 6 months old. The boy has been exclusively breastfed but the girl is on formula. When they were born, she was very demanding and used to cry alot when feeding. Due to the exhaustion and pressure of others, I put her on the bottle. I have been expressing for her but don't have much time so only get about 100ml - 150mlper day. Is it too late to get her to breastfeed? How can I increase milk supply so that I can express more for her and also quicker? Thanks.

Solids

My six month old is on Rice cereal at midday and pears or carrots in the afternoons, around 6h30. She will then have 2 bottles during the day, and one bottle after her bath in the evenings around 7h30. She seems happy and healthy, but I would like to know how much breastmilks she she needs on a daily basis. She is not on formula, and drinks the expressed milk of the previous day, as I am working and express 3 feeds during the day at work. She I also breastfeed her during the night, when she wakes up for a feed

Weaning my 12 month old

Hi Susan, My baby girl is now just over 1 year (walking and very active). She is tall and petite, but is not under or overweight. I am trying to wean her now, but its a frustrating losing battle. She is teething (molars) and only want to drink breast milk when she is teething. She hardly eat any food. Today was a good day: breakfast - breast milk, lunch - 2 bites of a margerine toastie, 2 tsp vanilla yogurt, apple juice, 2 sips of nido growing up milk, 2 cherio's, at 3 breast milk, at 5 breast milk, dinner - 1 teaspoon mince and peas, 1 teaspoon vanilla yogurt, 1 teaspoon peanutbutter (i will make or give her anything she will eat), tiny bite vieanna, sips apple juice (apple juice, maybe 60 ml the whole day, yesterday 200ml for the day), little bit of water. Then I put her to sleep on the breast at 7/8pm. Good night she will sleep till 11 or maybe 1, then short feed, then 3am she is awake. She drinks, but does not go back to sleep. Eventually out of desperation I move her to our room, she falls asleep drinking but continue to drink till 5/6am and I am normally still awake when my husband get up. Then she falls asleep for maybe an hour (and I get an hour sleep, sometimes 10 minutes). She sleeps from 9-10 in the morning or 12-1 and then 3-4 or 4-5pm. I want to wean her, but know I need to get her to eat first? Can you help? I give her ponstan and panado for the teeth + teejel and sometimes even rub cherrie on the gums (when I am really really desperate to get her to sleep). I am sure the sleeping will be better when she eats and stop drinking breast milk. Also I cant get her to sleep without breastfeeding? Tried singing, rocking, got a sheep that make sounds of heartbeat, doedoe blankie... not getting anywhere? Thanks for your advice! Regards Karin
