As a child I remember putting my tooth that had just fallen out into a slipper and knowing that the next morning there would be a shiny new R5 coin in it's place. I was fully aware that one of my parents would be doing this. I had no delusions of a tooth fairy but by gods, I would get that R5!
Twitter user @jemimamadsen asked what the going rate for a tooth was and we posed the question to our Twitter and Facebook followers. Here's what they had to say:
@CathyMarston I've heard R10 so far
@jemimamadsen I've also heard R10 so far :-)
R10 - R20, way to expensive. - Rene Devan
R10 for the first tooth, R5 for every tooth they pull out themselves and R2 for the teeth that fall out by themselves. - Monique Paananen
R20 - Ingrid Mourik Stals
Oh my word now I'm scared!! My baby is 15 months and has only just got 4 teeth! Think I'll start a fund and put R10 into a jar for each tooth she gets so when they fall out its not going to rock the budget!! Wow hahahaha - Hayley Markham
My eldest (9) got super rich off his first tooth (because everyone gave something) R100. Thereafter it was R20 per tooth. - Leanne Nezar Nee Downing
The Tooth Fairy didn't have any change and ended giving R100! At least it was the first tooth:) - Noha Schroeder-Gamildien
Mine got R5 a tooth. But the "Tandemuis" also left him a letter. He was extremely impressed with the letter. He hasn't cottoned on to paper money yet :) - Sumanda Maritz
We gave R20 for 1st tooth. Now it's R10 a tooth. He has a tooth mouse pillow that says 'no cheques or coins accepted'. Otherwise it would be R5 a tooth :) - Rebecca Van Eeden
Here's what some of our parents had to say about the cost of a tooth:
Poof goes the Tooth Fairy
Money from the tooth fairy
Bling-bling teeth
Some of these amounts seem a bit ridiculous. How much do you think teeth are worth?
