We’ve been warned – Day Zero is fast approaching.

In fact, it’s been coming for quite some time now, with the Cape Town water crisis reportedly beginning in 2015.

But while we could point fingers and blame it on mismanagement and politics, an increase in population and decrease in rainfall, the fact is the taps are going to run dry with Day Zero projected to be 16 April. Dam levels are currently at only 26.3% and when they reach a low of 13.5%, the City will turn off the taps, whenever that may be.

Looking at the rest of South Africa, several regions are experiencing droughts and water restrictions.

If that doesn’t shake you to the core, we don’t know what will. It’s time to really start saving water and learning how to manage the very little we’ll have when D-day finally arrives.

So you've started to save water, and some people are increasingly inventive! Please send us your tips, tricks, photos, videos and ideas so we can share with other families! Send to chatback@parent24.com or share to our Facebook page

So just how much water is your family currently using? Check out the video below showing how a family of 4 might come in under 200 litres per day – that's 50 litres per person:
