New year, new parent
This time of year we all make new year's resolutions. Why not add a few to make you a more effective parent?

Here are a few ideas:

Be a good role model
Children tend to copy their parents' bad habits. If you act irresponsibly (for example by not fastening your seatbelt) you cannot expect your children to do otherwise. Practice what you preach!

Be a good role model by not being racist or disrespectful of others and being considerate.

Adopt healthy habits
Don't moan about unhealthy eating habits, smoking or lack of exercise if you are a puffing couch potato.

Be consistent and effective. Don't concentrate on negative behaviour but rather reinforce your child's positive attributes and deeds.

Get to know your child
Do fun things together. Make time to talk to your child and to get to know him or her.

Ask advice
If you struggle with certain aspects of parenting, ask advice. Speak to other parents, contact a parenting association or read one of the many parenting books available. – (Ilse Pauw, Health24)
