"As long as someone stays in my house they won’t be allowed to light a joint": A reader gets real

Not in my house!
Not in my house!

The country's cannabis-using citizens may have been swept up in joyous celebration when news broke about the legalisation of marijuana in the home, but for a lot of parents, it's as illegal as ever.

So while legislation is in the process of being rewritten, according to this Parent24 reader, the age-old parenting arsenal "as long as you're under my roof" remains firmly in place.

What's your take? Would you be okay with your child using weed under your roof when they reach the legal age? Has your opinion of weed changed at all since the ruling? Tell us by emailing to chatback@parent24.com and we could publish your letter. Do let us know if you'd like to stay anonymous.

Here's what she had to say:

"I don’t use cannabis and like most of the memes, I don’t agree with it. I would never allow my children to use cannabis. When government makes certain laws it doesn’t mean it will stick in my house.

"As long as I have a say over my children I will not allow them to do anything that goes against my principles. I can't stand the smell of smoking what more cannabis. Now we will have to endure the smell when other people use it even if it will mean we have to smell it in our own houses.

"It just blows my mind what government will allow and how we like to compare ourselves (country) with other countries and adopting their stance on certain things. As long as someone stays in my house, whether they an adult part of my family or not, they won’t be allowed. I don’t do it why should I allow them?"

Just to be clear...

According to the Constitutional ruling:

  • only adults are given the permission to smoke weed at home,
  • children under 18 are NOT allowed to smoke whatsoever,
  • you may NOT even smoke in the presence of children (under 18s),
  • and you may NOT smoke in the presence of non-consenting adults.
