Q&A: Struggling to have a child for the past 7 years

accreditation

Dr Bronwyn Moore (gynaecologist) answers:

I’m so sorry to hear of the tough time you’ve had. Early miscarriages are often due to chromosomal problems, and unfortunately that can’t be prevented. It would be good to know if you’ve seen a foetus and a heart beat in those pregnancies, or if the sac has been empty. If there has been a heart beat it is possible that you have an underlying blood clotting problem like antiphospholipid syndrome (APLS), or a thrombophilia. These should be tested for as blood thinners, like injectable heparin, significantly improve pregnancy outcome. As for the 18 week loss, if that was because of cervical incompetence then a cervical cerclage (stitch) placed at around 13 to 14 weeks may help. Contact the gynae department of the nearest big government hospital. There is often a specialist with as special interest in recurrent pregnancy loss that could help you.
