'My daughter is my grandchild'
Mother, 58, becomes surrogate to her own daughter’s child.
A 58-year-old woman from Utah, US, has chosen to help fulfill her own daughter’s desires for motherhood by carrying her baby for her, according to The Stir. The unusual surrogacy reflects the family’s close bond, and was not undertaken lightly.

The joys of being a mom and granny at the same time

32-year-old Lorena and her husband had endured 12 miscarriages before turning to surrogacy as an option. A friend had offered but then withdrew the offer once she realised the full commitment, so Lorena’s mom, Julia decided to take on what must be one of the most powerful displays of mother-daughter love possible.

Surrogacy can come with many emotional, physical and financial hurdles; apart from the regular rigours of pregnancy (a particular challenge for a woman of 58), Julia and Lorena also had to overcome three months of psychological counselling, three months of hormone injections and various contracts to sign in order to clarify the legalities surrounding surrogate motherhood.

Interestingly, the first embryo implanted took and resulted in a healthy pregnancy- this, and the familial ties helped to cut the costs of treatment in half from approximately $US 60,000. Lorena’s baby and Julia’s grandchild is due within a few weeks.

Surrogacy in SA

In 1987 a South African woman became the first in the world to give birth to her grandchildren, so surrogacy isn’t new, but the debates surrounding it continue.

Just like adoption and IVF, surrogacy involves many complex decisions. As medical aid companies are not willing to cover the related procedures, a couple or individual wishing to have a baby via surrogate must have plenty of savings available. In addition, it can cause lots of emotional distress, especially if the decision to use surrogacy comes after years of fertility problems. In SA there are laws governing the act of surrogacy including financial recompense and legal documents required to validate the legitimacy of a surrogacy. Another consideration is the possibility of a multiple pregnancy resulting from IVF.
