Most women, if not all, know there is a period of time in their lives when it is "ideal" to conceive. However, there are women who has defied the norm and have been able to conceive after 40.
One of our readers, Melanie Guentel, said: "I was told I wasn't ovulating and couldn't conceive naturally. Twelve weeks later I was pregnant! Doctors said 'high-risk', 'placenta previa', 'do not travel', 'you must do a C-section'...but I know my little boy would be fine and I delivered him just after I turned 40. Now heading for 42 and I am happy to try for number two."
Another reader, Erica Jansen Van Vuuren, said: "I had my first baby in 1993, when I was 18 years old (before I turned 19, later that year). I met my husband and our son was born in 2001 and daughter in 2003. In December 2014, age 40, we were surprised with a positive pregnancy. Our daughter was born in May 2015 and it was an easy pregnancy, except for varicose veins and painful pelvic joints. We call her our loadshedding baby!"
Lois Botha is grateful that she was able to have her son. She said: "I was 41 years old when my son was born. We battled for eight years, but what a blessing he is. I do find it hard to keep up with him, he is 5 now."
