Constipation

What is it?
This is a common cause of abdominal pain in children, when they have not had regular bowel movements. It is often a very vague pain involving the whole abdominal area. A bad diet and lack of fibre is often to blame, but some children may have a psychological barrier against going to the toilet, which can also cause constipation.

What to do

Change the whole family’s diet to include fresh fruit and vegetables and brown bread. Encourage your child to drink water instead of sweetened drinks. Go to the doctor if the constipation lasts for more than a couple of days, if the pain is very severe, or there is any sign of bleeding from the anus. If your child seems scared or reluctant to go, get a doctor’s advice. Don’t give laxatives to children unless prescribed a doctor.
