In a society where each day hundreds of children are neglected and abused, raped or even murdered, the culprits are seldom apprehended. If, on the off-chance that a case goes to court and they are found guilty, there is one especially troubling issue: There are no laws preventing a parent convicted of killing his own children from reproducing once his sentence has been completed.
You may laugh to yourself at the idea that a convicted killer may ever have the chance to reproduce, assuming that he is in prison, but prison sentences rarely remove even the craziest of killers from society forever.
Blogger Keli Goff makes this point in a post about the same topic:
“If a doctor is found to have committed multiple errors or acts of negligence that harm patients, he eventually loses his license to practice medicine. If a police officer is found to have harmed too many suspects without cause, she loses her badge. If a teacher is caught sexually abusing a child, he can never teach children again. So why is it that as law currently stands, there is nothing to stop that same teacher from having his own children with a spouse or partner after serving his time?”
Reoffenders and recidivists
There have been cases where abusive parents have been allowed to go free on bail and subsequently committed further acts of abuse against their own children. Occasionally, overworked social workers are unable to process allegations of negligence (even ongoing ones) before a parent ends up taking the lives of his children.
Cut off the problem?
Surely, given the overwhelming statistics of child abuse and murders of children (and these most likely to be committed by relatives), more should be done to prevent those convicted of such crimes against their own children from ever having the opportunity of having more kids?
Some countries, such as Russia, South Korea and even the UK have introduced chemical castration for certain sexual offenders, especially paedophiles. South Africa as yet has no plans to introduce measures such as these, despite the horrific statistics of sexual crimes against children.
