The big pregnancy question blooper

Asking a woman if she’s pregnant is a very unwise thing to do.

Ever made what is possibly one of the biggest social blunders ever, and asked a woman if she’s pregnant, only to be met with (at best!) silence?

Perhaps you’ve been asked yourself, and dealt with the humiliation and embarrassment of someone looking at your belly, even patting you, and asking “When’s it due?”

Family are great at asking the uncomfortable question; they seem to assume that sharing blood allows the freedom to intrude. Colleagues forget to give you personal space, or are merely clumsy in their interrogation. Complete strangers become failed psychics and pregnancy-predictors.

It’s desperately hurtful if you’re trying-to-conceive, and wishing you were pregnant, and only slightly less hurtful if you’re battling to lose weight picked up during a previous pregnancy.

We asked Twitter if they’d ever had their womb-privacy invaded:

JessPerelson: Was asked by an estate agent. & I wasn't even overweight, just the dress I was wearing was empire line. Didn't buy that house!

Taniar2: I've been asked, I say just fat and stand back and watch them cringe.

ShazRich7: I've been asked & I burst in to tears of embarrassment! Never ever ever EVER ask unless you know!

watchingalice: (about a friend who was asked): She was always very gracious about it. I would have cried and buried myself in a pit for one whole calendar month.

I_am_FarmGirl: Been asked! Was not impressed :)

Of course, very often we can see if someone is, say, 8 months pregnant, but a round belly, or couple of extra kilos does not make a baby. If you’re already feeling bloated due to monthly body changes, it’s bound to make you see red if someone asks.

The bottom line, it seems? Try the Dave Barry approach:

“You should never say anything to a woman that even remotely suggests you think she's pregnant unless you can see an actual baby emerging from her at that moment.” - Dave Berry, 25 Things I Have Learned in 50 Years

Have you ever been asked the dreaded question? How did you respond?
