Fired for using artificial insemination

accreditation
A Catholic school terminated the employment of a teacher after she confessed that she was pregnant. Initially, the school considered firing Christa Dias for being single and pregnant, however, on discovering that this would violate anti-discrimination laws, they chose to fire her for using artificial insemination in order to fall pregnant- a medical procedure considered “gravely immoral” according to Catholic teachings, revealed Care2.com.

Dias hasn’t managed to find a new job, and has said that she’s considering litigation, but the school insists that she had violated her contract, which required her to comply with Catholic teachings, which would include not using artificial insemination.

According to CatholicCulture.org, the Catholic Church teaches that:

•    “among humans artificial insemination constitutes such a violation of the dignity of the person and the sanctity of marriage as to be contrary to the natural and divine law

•    Artificial insemination is a form of adultery

•    Even if insemination could be artificially achieved with the husband’s semen properly collected (without masturbation) the papal teaching still points out that it is inconsistent with a two-in-one-flesh union.

Double standards?

As if that wasn’t enough, according to the way in which the rules are structured, if a man working at the school had fathered children via artificial insemination, he wouldn’t necessarily be fired, since a man can father children without it being obvious.

The case has highlighted the ways in which it is possible for a woman to be the victim of discrimination in issues surrounding fertility, unless, of course, you agree that the school was justified in firing Dias.
