Waiting for a baby

Sometimes I get so whiny about trying to conceive, I get tired of myself!

‘Oh my word, guess who’s pregnant?’, these are words I hear almost every day. And while I put on a great big smile and gush, ‘that’s so great!’, I don’t really mean it.

Inside I’m thinking: ‘Seriously? What about me?!’ and then tend to take a bathroom break to pull myself together. It’s hard being TTC (trying to conceive), especially if it’s been for a prolonged period of time and people are falling pregnant with relative ease around you.

When I got married I never thought we would have a problem conceiving so when it’s been more than a year and you’ve been to the gynae (who says everything is looking good), I can’t help but mope.

But nobody likes a moaner and my husband now rolls his eyes every time I tell him someone is pregnant because he knows all that means is that I turn into a useless puddle of depression. He is much more level headed and logical about the whole thing.

A support system

There’s an unnecessary pressure on couples who have been married longer than 2 years to reproduce and when you are trying to conceive you put even more pressure on yourself. You want to shout: ‘It’s not like I’m not trying! Leave me alone!’

I told one of my friends in a bout of frustration: ‘Maybe I can’t have babies!’ That was a low point.

But maybe letting a few people in on the fact that you’re TTC can help. You’ll have someone to talk to and when you feel it’s getting a bit much for one friend, you can talk to another.

Another great way of finding support and encouragement is on parenting blogs or forums. Someone else has experienced what I’m going through and can understand with much more sympathy than someone who fell pregnant by sneezing.

All in all, it’s a tough place to be and I suppose I will have moments of weakness, but that’s okay. But hopefully soon, it will be my turn to see those 2 pink lines on a stick.
