What is it?
Chickenpox is caused by a virus, and causes a fever, loss of appetite and a very itchy rash of small blisters. It is becoming less common since many children are receiving the vaccine.

What to do

Most commonly, the disease is just allowed to run its course. But the itching is really bad, so be prepared to give lots of cool baths, dab on the calamine lotion and offer paracetamol to deal with fever. In rare cases the virus stays in the body and may cause shingles in later life.
