Insect bites and stings

Symptoms:

• Localised pain
• Itchiness or irritation
• A small raised area around the sting or bite

Seriousness:

• Treat at home, or if your child shows symptoms of anaphylactic shock due to an allergic reaction to the sting or bite, take her to hospital immediately.

Treatment:

• Cool compresses, calamine and tea tree oil relieve itchiness.
• Keep your child's nails short and clean so that the bites don't become infected from scratching.
