What is it?
Mumps is an uncomfortable but usually not serious illness caused by a virus. It causes a fever, general sense of unwellness and characteristic facial swelling. Meningitis and encephalitis are possible complications of mumps in children. Keep a child with mumps away from a woman in her first trimester of pregnancy if possible.

What to do

Mumps can't be cured, so treat the symptoms and keep the child comfortable. The mumps vaccine is part of the government’s recommended schedule, so mumps is now less common than it once was.
