Disciplinary action will be taken against educators who refuse to teach Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE).

This is according to Basic Education Minister, Angie Motshekga, in a written response to a parliamentary question posed by DA MP Nomsa Marchesi.

Motshekga says Life Orientation (LO) has been taught since 2000 and teachers cannot refuse to teach CSE, as it is part of Life Orientation.

Support mechanisms

Support mechanisms have been put in place to ensure teachers are equipped to teach CSE, she says.

These include 3 day training courses that cover the content and teaching methodologies used, and how to use the updated Scripted Lesson Plans (SLPs), which include lesson demonstrations, says Motshekga.

Subject Advisors will be receiving coaching and mentoring training to be able to provide continuous support to teachers during implementation.

Motshekga has previously said in another written response to a parliamentary question that parents have the option of opting out of the new CSE lessons.

However, DBE spokesperson, Elijah Mhlanga, told Parent24 the only way parents can opt out of the new CSE lessons is by sending their child to private school, or homeschooling them.

Parents and teachers are still opposed to the CSE lessons

Parents and teachers continue to express their disapproval of the CSE lessons.

Membership of the Facebook group, called #LeaveOurKidsAlone, continues to grow rapidly as more parents and teachers join the group to express their concerns.

Group founder Lauren Evanthia told Parent24 the group is calling for a total ban on all forms of sex education in schools, and that they will bring the country to a standstill if they must.
