Seven bursaries matriculants should know about

Getting funding for tertiary education is always stressful – especially when you’ve left it to the last minute. Fortunately there are at least 7 bursaries for matrics who want to pursue careers in education, engineering, finance and fashion.

Funza Lushaka 

This bursary is awarded by the Department of Basic Education and is available to students pursuing a teaching qualification. Recipients are required to teach at a public school for the same number of years that they received the bursary.

The value of the bursary differs from institution to institution but is meant to cover basic expenses including tuition, accommodation and meals, books and learning materials, and a small living allowance.

Recipients must reapply every year. Funza Lushaka bursaries may not be allocated to employees of higher education institutions, their spouses or their children or dependents. 

Requirements:

  • A valid South African ID.
  • Applicants must already have been accepted for a BEd course at an accredited university.
  • Good academic ability.
  • The applicant must show a commitment to and enthusiasm for a career in teaching.

RCL Foods Bursary South Africa 2018/19 

RCL Foods supplies a range of popular South African food brands. The company awards highly motivated students with bursaries to complete their tertiary studies in the fields of accounting, chemical engineering and mechanical engineering.

In some instances the company may offer employment after graduation. 

Requirements: 

  • South African citizenship.
  • A matric certificate.
  • A matric average of 65%.
  • The intention to study full-time in one of the above-mentioned fields.
  • Applicants must intend to study at a registered SA tertiary institution.

Solomon Mahlangu Scholarship Fund 

The National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) offers scholarships to students under the age of 25 to study at public universities across South Africa. The Solomon Mahlangu Scholarship Fund aims to financially support youngsters, particularly from rural areas, pursuing further education.

Applicants must have applied for university courses in the priority fields identified by the Department of Labour, which include information technology, statistical analysis and data mining, sales and engineering. The scholarship covers tuition, accommodation, meals and study materials.

Requirements: 

  • Applicants must be applying for admission to a public university as a first-year student in a priority study.
  • Must meet the University Admissions Points Score (APS) and achieve an average of 70% in exams.
  • Must be South African citizens under the age of 35.
  • Must be from households with a combined monthly income of less than R15 000 a month.
  • Must be from rural or semi-rural areas.

Kumba Iron Ore Bursary

This bursary is offered by the Anglo-American corporation and covers registration fees, tuition, study material and accommodation as well as a computer and calculator allowance.

The Kumba Iron Ore bursary is available for students pursuing degrees in the following fields:

  • Mining engineering 
  • Metallurgical engineering 
  • Electrical engineering (heavy current) 
  • Mechanical engineering 
  • Industrial engineering  
  • Civil engineering 
  • Geology (honours)
  • Minerals surveying (BTech)

Requirements for bursaries in pursuit of a degree: 

  • Pure maths and science (achievement levels 6 & 7)
  • English (achievement level 5)

Requirements in pursuit of a BTech qualification:

  • Pure maths and science (achievement level 5)
  • English (achievement level 5)

Preference is given to learners from Anglo-American operational local communities (Sishen, Kolomela and Thabazimbi mines).

Old Mutual Actuarial Bursary South Africa 2018 

Old Mutual offers a bursary to students who intend to study for an actuarial science qualification at Stellenbosch University or the University of Cape Town. The bursary covers tuition, study materials, a capped travel allowance, meals and accommodation. Old Mutual also provides incentives for good performance, holiday work and networking opportunities. 

Requirements:

  • Applicants must be South African citizens.
  • Must obtain an A+ in matric maths, and
  • A and B symbols in their other matric subjects.

The Foschini Group Bursary 2017/18

The Foschini Group is a lifestyle retail organisation that includes well-known stores such as American Swiss, Markham, Total Sports, Sportscene and Donna Claire. Bursaries are awarded to deserving students who wish to pursue a three-year BA or BA honours fashion degree at FEDISA, the only tertiary institution in Cape Town that offers this qualification.

The bursary covers tuition fees, prescribed textbooks, design kits, overlocker, sewing machine, clothing, accommodation, room décor allowance, Macbook, required software, a cellphone with data and airtime, printing allowance, transport allowing, coaching and support.

Requirements: 

  • A strong academic record.
  • The applicant must have completed maths, arts and design in matric.
  • Must intend to start their course in January.
  • Must be business-minded.
  • Must be creative and have a love for fashion.

Sasol Bursaries 2019

International chemicals and energy company Sasol invites current Matrics to apply for the all-inclusive undergraduate bursary for 2019, which covers registration fees, 100% of the university tuition fees, exam fees, accommodation, food and R12 000 for books and pocket money.

The bursary also caters for postgraduate studies. Postgraduate students receive a monthly allowance of R10 000 for up to 24 months while they complete their Master’s and up to 36 months for those doing studying towards their PhDs.

Furthermore, Sasol bursars also have the opportunity to do paid vacation work during the holidays and also to be part of the company’s Graduate Development Programme after graduating.

Requirements:

  • Top performing learners in Maths and Science who want to study towards a B Eng or BSc Eng, BSc in Chemistry and Accounting (CA route) or learners interested in studying Instrumentation, Mining Survey and Mechanical or Electrical Engineering at a University of Technology.
  • Applicants need to obtain 70% for Maths, 70% for Science and 60% for English to be considered.
