A couple who were expecting their third baby girl were stunned to discover they were having a boy – despite eight scans telling them otherwise.

Sarah Heaney and her husband, William Govan, from Northern Ireland, bought pink clothes, blankets, teddies and a crib after a scan at 17 weeks revealed they were having another girl.

The couple had another scan done at 20 weeks followed by growth scans every three weeks from around Sarah’s 25th week of pregnancy.

All of the sonographers and three different consultants said they believe the couple would be welcoming another girl to their clan, but after being two days overdue Sarah went into hospital for a final scan which confirmed she was actually having a boy.

“When I first found out I was having a girl I was happy enough. I already had two girls, most of my friends had girls and I’d never really been around boys so I thought at least I knew what I was doing,” Sarah says.

“I was quite excited about my girl tribe but the ironic thing is my eldest daughter really wanted a brother so I had to keep drumming it into her that it was a girl and that it was going to be fun.”

The mom-of-three captured the hilarious moment her daughters, Ella (7) and Abbie (3) found out they were actually getting a brother.

According to Sarah the couple had settled on two names, Luna or Penny. The girls preferred Luna so they’d been calling the baby that.

That same day the family had to rush to town as Sarah was going into labour. She’d already started having contractions, but waited patiently in the car while William dashed into the shops to pick up a few new baby grows for their baby boy.

Max, who’s now 12 weeks old, arrived later that evening weighing 7lbs (3,2kg).

“My youngest still got confused at the start even after he was born and was calling Max, Luna,” Sarah says.

“In my sleep-deprived state I sometimes called him a she and referred to him as her too.”

Sarah said when Max was born she asked everyone to double check if he really was a boy.

“It was a bit of a whirlwind at the time but he’s perfect and we wouldn’t change him for the world.”
