A woman from southern India might just be the oldest person to give birth after bearing two baby girls at the age of 74. Erramatti Mangayamma and husband Raja Rao had been trying to conceive since tying the knot in 1962.

And after almost giving up on ever having kids the couple decided to try in vitro fertilisation (IVF). The treatment was successful and a team of four doctors at a private hospital in Guntur recently performed a caesarean section on Erramatti to deliver the twins, reports Times of India.

“The surgery went smoothly. Both mother and the infants are healthy and have no complications whatsoever. However, the mother has been taken to intensive care unit to come out of the stress she had undergone for the last few hours,” Dr Sanakayyala Umashankar told The Hindustan Times.

“She could not succeed in her attempts to conceive even after visiting several hospitals. Even after she attained menopause nearly 25 years ago, she had a strong desire to become a mother,” Dr Umashankar said.

Even though Mangayamma won’t be able to breastfeed her babies, she and Raja couldn’t be happier to have children of their own. “I am very happy. After 54 years God has answered our prayers,” the new mom said.

“It’s due to the grace of God and doctors that I have now become a proud father of two baby girls,” her husband added. “We are the happiest couple on Earth today. We have our own children.”
